Composition
Cimicifuga, Peony, and Prepared Licorice each 10 liang; Pueraria 15 liang.
Preparation
Grind the above into coarse powder. Take 3 qian (9 g) each time, use one and a half cups of water, decoct to obtain one medium cup, remove the dregs, take slightly warm, without regard to time, two or three times a day. The endpoint is when the disease qi is gone and the body feels cool and refreshed (modern usage: prepare as a Decoction, decoct in water and take orally; reduce the dosage according to the original formula proportions).
Form
湯劑
Function
Release the muscles and promote eruption.
Traditional indications
1. Treats Yangming cold damage and wind stroke: headache, generalized body pain, fever, aversion to cold, absence of sweating, thirst, eye pain, dry nose, and inability to lie down. 2. Measles not yet erupted or erupted but not fully expressed; symptoms include fever, aversion to wind, headache, body pain, sneezing, cough, red eyes with tearing, thirst, red tongue with dry coating, and floating rapid pulse.
Modifications
Pediatric measles and chickenpox: add Mint:6, Cicada slough:1.5, Arctium fruit:10, Platycodon:6, Arnebia root:12. -- If unable to erupt due to wind-cold attacking the exterior, with concurrent aversion to cold, no sweating, nasal congestion, clear nasal discharge, thin white coating, etc.: add Saposhnikovia:10, Schizonepeta:10. -- Pneumonia with panting and cough: combine with Ma Xing Gan Shi Tang.
Cautions
Do not take in cold damage that has not entered Yangming, for fear that it may instead lead the exterior pathogen into Yangming. If measles has already erupted, or if measles toxin has sunk inward with rapid rough breathing, panting with raised shoulders, and flaring nostrils, then it is contraindicated.
