Yellow Earth Decoction

金匱要略

Blood in stool, first stool then blood, this is distant blood; Huangtu Tang governs it. It also governs hematemesis and epistaxis. (Jin Gui Yao Lue (Essential Prescriptions of the Golden Cabinet))

Licorice, Dried Rehmannia, Baizhu (white atractylodes), Prepared Aconite, Donkey-hide Gelatin, Scutellaria, each 3 liang; Stove-center Earth 0.5 jin. The above seven ingredients, with 8 sheng of water, decoct to obtain 3 sheng, and divide into two warm doses. (Shang Han Za Bing Lun)

湯劑

Warm yang and fortify the spleen, nourish blood and stop bleeding.

Spleen yang decline, blood in stool, and hematemesis, epistaxis, uterine bleeding in women, with dim blood color, cold limbs, sallow complexion, pale tongue with white coating, and a deep, thin, weak pulse.

For severe Qi deficiency: add Ginseng: 10. -- For more severe spleen-stomach deficiency cold: add Prepared Ginger: 10. -- For heavy bleeding: add Sanqi: 3, Baiji: 3.

1. For poor appetite: Donkey-hide Gelatin may be changed to Donkey-hide Gelatin Beads (to reduce its cloying nature). 2. It is contraindicated in all bleeding caused by heat forcing blood to move abnormally.
