Function
Dispel wind and smooth qi, dissipate nodules and transform stagnation.
Traditional indications
1. All wind-qi conditions: attacking and pouring into the four limbs, joint pain, stubborn numbness throughout the body, dizziness of head and eyes, paralysis, hesitant speech, contracture of sinews and vessels, beriberi, difficulty walking, weakness of feet and knees.
2. Women's blood wind, elderly cold qi, attacking upward to the chest and diaphragm, stabbing pain in both hypochondria, distension of heart and abdomen, vomiting and diarrhea with borborygmus, pale red tongue, thin or deep pulse.
Modifications
In women with absent menstruation: combine with Ba Zhen Tang.
Cautions
1. This formula is a method of resolving surface qi and also smoothing interior qi; when qi is smooth, wind dissipates. It is suitable at the initial stage when pathogen qi is excess; if the illness is prolonged with Qi deficiency, it is not suitable.
2. If Ma Huang is used at 15 g or more, it must be decocted for a long time, at least two hours.
3. Prescriptions containing Ma Huang should not be taken after 8 p.m.; otherwise, insomnia may easily result. If insomnia still occurs, change to taking it after breakfast and lunch.
4. Those who are thin and weak, those who are weak and frequently ill, and those who are thin, pale, and sweat easily should all use Ma Huang with caution.
