Inula and Hematite Decoction

傷寒論

In cold damage, after sweating, or emesis, or purgation, after resolution, if belching persists, Xuan Fu Dai Zhe Tang governs it. (Shang Han Lun)

Xuanfuhua 3 liang; Renshen 2 liang; Shengjiang 5 liang; Daizhe 1 liang; Gancao 3 liang (honey-fried); Banxia half sheng (washed); Dazao 12 pieces (split). The above seven ingredients, with one dou of water, decoct to obtain six sheng, remove the dregs, and decoct again to obtain three sheng. Take one sheng warm, three times a day. (Shang Han Za Bing Lun)

With one dou of water, decoct to obtain six sheng, remove the dregs and decoct again, obtain three sheng, take one sheng warm, three times a day. (Modern usage: decoct nine bowls of water down to three bowls; take one bowl warm after each of the three meals.)

湯劑

Descend adverse qi and resolve phlegm, benefit qi and harmonize the stomach.

When stomach qi is weak, with internal obstruction of turbid phlegm, epigastric fullness and hardness, and persistent belching.

Yang deficiency constitution, pale, swollen, tender tongue, white, slippery, wet coating, and a wiry, tight pulse; pancreatic cancer with a tendency to yang deficiency: add Wuzhuyu 10, Ganjiang 10. -- Pancreatic cancer with dry vomiting, vomiting, acid regurgitation, and abdominal pain: combine with Gan Jiang Huang Qin Huang Lian Ren Shen Tang. -- Liver wood overacting on spleen earth, with hiccup and belching accompanied by a wiry pulse: combine with Si Ni San. -- Constipation: add Dahuang 6. -- Headache: add Wuzhuyu 10, Chuanxiong 10. -- Deficiency cold hiccup: add Dingxiang 10, Shidi 10. -- Chronic illness with physical weakness, and severe deficiency of original qi with subsequent hiccup: add Ganjiang 10, Pao Fuzi 10.

In the formula, Daizheshi is cold in nature and descends, which can hinder stomach qi. If stomach deficiency is more pronounced, its dosage should not be too heavy.
